The Local Park

In September, 2006, the official opening of Borrisokane Town Park is scheduled to take place, This new facility for the expanding Town of Borrisokane will incorporate safe public walkways through a 12 acre park-land setting and within the following 12 months, a Children’s Playground and All-weather soccer pitch
A large variety and number of trees will also be planted to enhance the natural beauty of the park.

These will be accompanied by signage providing information on the tree species and on wildlife in the locality,

It is also proposed, as part of a 5 year plan, that Borrisokane Town Park will also incorporate a public stage are where outdoor dramatic, musical and literary performances can take place.

New cemetery: Nenagh road

Blessed and opened on 23rd June 1914, the same day as the bell of the old R.C
church.

This bell is still in use in the new church.

Completed and consecrated in 1973, this modern type structure replaces and older cut-stone building, built in 1832

The Fair Green

A spacious are which one meets on approaching the Main Street, In bygone days this area was used for the sale of livestock, today the Post Office, a large engineering works and garage, a boat building and engine sales business are prominent features.

Adjacent to the Fair Green is the public swimming pool, tennis court, public library, fire station, community hall and a soccer pitch
In 1829 the green area extended to the Finnoe Road.

Church of Ireland

Situated across from the Fair Green on Church Road this building was erected in 1812
The church is surrounded by a very old graveyard that dates back long before the present building was erected, possibly to the middle of the 17th century.

The Fair Green

The Hurling Field

Located in Whitehall this field is named after Seamus Gardiner who was the president of the G.A.A
from 1943 to 1946.

This field has been the home of hurling and football in Borrisokane since 1916.

Methodist Chapel

Situated on the Main Street the fine stone building built in 1867 replaces a smaller chapel built in 1811
The round stained glass window on the front of the chapel is an admirable feature.

This is the next point of interest
Here we have the girl’s convent school (1887) run by the Sisters Of Mercy until 1994.

Off school lane, it us unusual because somewhat below street level
The waster fountain at the end is supplied from a spring some 2 miles away and is gravity fed.

Garda Barracks

Across from the convent school this building was occupied by British forces during the fight for independence
On the 20th June 1920, it was attacked by members of the I.R.A.

The Mill

A building of considerable stature built c.1800, on the bank of the Ballyfinboy River
The mill complex comprises two mills, kiln, ancillary store and a mill house.

David Clarke Memorial Hall

This hall is on the Birr Road opposite the old R.C. Church
It was endowed by will of Harriette Clarke, dated 18th Oct.

The Old Roman Catholic Church

This was built in 1832 and was replaced on the Nenagh Road by a newer building in 1973
The original building is now used by the Social Welfare.

This fine house was built in 1812 and was originally called “The Giebe House”
It was the living accommodation for the Protestant clergy men and their families.

So called because of the Vocational College at the other end
The first two storey building on this road stands on the site of the old Fever Hospital (1845).

In this house was born Mark Anne Phelan, the mother of Hollywood film actor, Martin Sheen, born Ramon Estevez in 1940, has been an established screen actor for 25 years

Borrisokane and District Vintage club Fun day
Borrisokane and District Vintage Club are holding their 4th Annual Threshing, Fun Day and Vintage Display in Borrisokane on Sunday, September 12th. The entertainment for the day will include some of
your favourites from last year. There will also be a display of vintage tractors, cars and all sorts of bits and pieces for all the vintage enthusiasts, along with a demonstration of the Threshing Machine.
This event has been hugely successful over the past three years and is proving to be great family day out. More details next week. The organising committee meet on Tuesday night in the Snooker Hall, Borrisokane at 9 p.m. and anybody interested in helping out on the
day are invited to come along.
